In caravan journeys, lighting plays a big role in both comfort and safety. Choosing the right LED strip isn't just about creating an ambiance; it's also important for energy management, durability, and ease of use. Below, you will find detailed technical and practical points to consider when selecting an LED strip for both travel and stationary caravan/equipment use.

Basic technical criteria

1. Voltage and power (12V / 24V, W/m)

The most common system in caravans is 12V; however, some larger vehicles prefer 24V. Most LED strips are sold in 12V or 24V versions. Choosing the correct voltage is critical for direct compatibility with the power source and safety. In addition, the power consumption of the strips is given in W/m (watts/meter). Example calculation:

  • For a 14.4 W/m, 12V strip: current = 14.4 / 12 ≈ 1.2 A/m
  • Total current for 4 meters of use ≈ 4.8 A

Such calculations are necessary for battery capacity and fuse selection.

2. LED type and density (SMD 3528, 5050, 2835, LED/m)

SMD codes indicate the size and type of the LED. In summary:

  • 3528: Low brightness, low power consumption, economical.
  • 5050: High brightness, common for RGB applications (triple core package), higher power consumption.
  • 2835: New and efficient; good balance of brightness/power.

As the LED/m value increases (e.g., 60 LED/m, 120 LED/m), more uniform lighting and higher brightness are achieved. For general indoor lighting, 120 LED/m may be preferred; for decorative lighting, 60 LED/m may be sufficient.

3. Color temperature and CRI

Color temperature (Kelvin) and CRI (Color Rendering Index) should be chosen according to your intended use:

  • 2700–3000K: Warm and relaxing; ideal for living and resting areas.
  • 3500–4200K: Natural/neutral light; suitable for kitchens and work areas.
  • 5000–6500K: Daylight; provides high contrast for delicate tasks and reading but makes the environment feel cold.

While a CRI value above 80 is sufficient for most applications, if color accuracy is important indoors, a CRI of 90+ is recommended (especially in textile and food preparation areas).

Durability and installation criteria

4. Water and moisture resistance (IP ratings)

The IP rating determines the strip's protection against external factors:

  • IP20: Indoor, dry areas.
  • IP65: Dustproof + resistant to low-pressure water splashes – suitable for patio, awning lights.
  • IP67/IP68: For areas that may be exposed to temporary or continuous water (e.g., underbody, outdoor applications, areas near water).

For external caravan applications or humid areas like kitchens/bathrooms, at least IP65 is recommended.

5. Heat dissipation and aluminum profiles

LED strips generate heat; efficient heat dissipation is important for a long lifespan. Adhering them directly to thin, insulated surfaces shortens the strip's life. Using aluminum channels (profiles) dissipates heat, homogenizes the light, and makes installation aesthetic. Aluminum profiles are a good investment for under cabinets or above tables inside a caravan.

6. Adhesive quality and vibration resistance

Vibration and temperature changes in a caravan can cause adhesive tapes to loosen over time. Prefer strong 3M brand tape or mechanical fastening (clips, screwing). For outdoor applications, silicone or screw fastening may be required.

Controls and features

7. Dimmability and PWM

Dimming features are useful; however, low-quality dimmers may keep the PWM frequency low, causing flicker visible to the eye and camera. Choose drivers that use high-frequency (>1–2 kHz) PWM or analog dimming. Stepped dimming is important for eye comfort in night mode in a caravan.

8. RGB, RGBW, Tunable White, and addressable LEDs

  • RGB: Color effects; white tone may not be pure. Ideal for general ambiance.
  • RGBW: White LED + RGB; provides a more realistic white and color combination – versatile for caravan interiors.
  • Tunable White (CCT): Allows adjusting color temperature – perfect for morning/evening modes.
  • Addressable (WS2812, APA102): Each LED is controlled separately; useful for dynamic effects but increases power management and control complexity.

For practical use in a caravan, RGBW or CCT strips are generally the most preferred.

9. Control methods: IR, RF, Bluetooth, Wi‑Fi

Remote control types include:

  • IR: Requires direct line of sight, simple and inexpensive.
  • RF: Better range and unaffected by obstacles.
  • Bluetooth/Wi‑Fi: Enables smartphone integration, timing, and automation.

In a caravan, RF or Bluetooth may be more practical; Wi‑Fi controlled devices require extra attention in terms of battery/electrical management.
