One of the most common questions when buying an LED: "Which color temperature should I choose?" The Kelvin (K) value determines the color tone of the LED light, and the right choice makes a big difference in both comfort and efficiency. In this guide, you will find the ideal Kelvin value for every space.
What is Kelvin?
Kelvin is a unit that measures the color temperature of light. Lower Kelvin values produce warm, yellowish tones, while higher Kelvin values produce cool, bluish white tones. The Kelvin value is not related to the brightness of the light (lumens) — it only determines the color tone.
Kelvin Scale
🔶 2700K — Warm White
The color of a traditional incandescent bulb. The most eye-friendly, most relaxing tone. Supports melatonin secretion in the evenings and maintains sleep patterns.
Most suitable spaces: Bedroom, living room, restaurant, hotel room, lobby
🟡 3000K — Soft Warm White
Warm and inviting, but slightly brighter than 2700K. Balances both relaxation and visual comfort.
Most suitable spaces: Living room, kitchen countertop, bathroom, boutique stores
🟢 4000K — Neutral White
Neither too warm nor too cool. Displays colors accurately, supports attention and concentration.
Most suitable spaces: Office, study room, kitchen, store, exhibition area
🔵 5000K — Daylight White
The closest tone to natural daylight. Maximizes color perception, increases alertness.
Most suitable spaces: Atelier, design studio, hospital, printing and dyeing works
⚪ 6000K— 6500K — Cool White / Daylight
Blue-toned, sharp and energetic light. Can cause eye strain with prolonged use.
Most suitable spaces: Garage, warehouse, industrial area, gym, outdoor security lighting
Kelvin Recommendations by Space
| Space | Recommended Kelvin | Why? |
|---|---|---|
| Bedroom | 2700K | Relaxing, sleep-friendly |
| Living Room | 2700K – 3000K | Warm and inviting atmosphere |
| Kitchen | 3000K – 4000K | Both comfortable and functional |
| Bathroom | 3000K – 4000K | For a natural look |
| Office / Study Room | 4000K – 5000K | Concentration and efficiency |
| Store / Display Window | 3000K – 4000K | Highlights products |
| Garage / Warehouse | 5000K – 6500K | Maximum visibility |
| Outdoor | 4000K – 6000K | Security and visibility |
Common Mistakes Regarding Color Temperature
- Lighting the entire house with the same Kelvin: Each space has different needs. Use layered lighting.
- Using 6000K in the bedroom: Blue light suppresses melatonin and reduces sleep quality.
- Confusing Kelvin with lumens: Kelvin is about color tone, not brightness. For brightness, look at lumens.
- Mixing different Kelvin values in the same room: Creates visual inconsistency.
Kelvin Control with Smart LED
If you cannot choose the color temperature, CCT adjustable (Tunable White) LEDs are the ideal solution. With a single fixture, you can choose any tone from 2700K to 6500K. By integrating with smart home systems, you can achieve automatic color transitions throughout the day.
